Get Your Toilet Unblocked | Plumbing Tips

Most of us have had a blocked toilet at some stage in our lives. For you first timers, welcome to the party!

A blocked toilet is no fun for anyone, and can cause a smelly mess and damage in no time. Having your toilet unblocked ASAP is the top priority as soon as you notice a problem. Normally there will be signs of a problem before things escalate into a full blown blockage. If you notice your toilet is draining slower than normal, that’s your first sign that something’s not right, and your best chance to fix the problem before it gets worse. Make sure everyone in your house is aware to keep an eye out for signs of leaks and blockages, and to raise them as soon as a problem is noticed.

One tool we should all have in our homes is a plunger. They’re extremely helpful for blocked sinks and drains, and your best friend when it comes to getting your toilet unblocked. Whether your toilet is draining slower than usual, or you already have a blockage, it’s time to pull out the plunger. The best type of plunger to have on hand for toilet problems is the type with a pull out rubber flange (see pic below). When pulled out this gives a better seal around the toilet, and will allow you to create more pressure and force for getting the toilet unblocked more easily.

How To Get Your Toilet Unblocked

Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger. Insert the plunger ensuring there’s a tight seal with the toilet bowl, and the flange is extended correctly. For your first push take it a bit easy to slowly force out any air that may be in the plunger, as this can cause water to spurt out, and also is less effective at creating the level of pressure needed to get the toilet unblocked. Pump the plunger in and out vigorously for 15-20 seconds. This should be enough to clear most blockages. If the problem persists repeat this until you achieve the desired result.

For a more serious blockage that can’t be cleared with a plunger, it’s time to call in a professional.
