The history of the Gold Coast – Where it all began!
Everyone’s heard of the beautiful Gold Coast, and whether you’ve been or not, you know that it’s sunny, popular, has stunning beaches and loads of tourist attractions. It’s just one of those places that most people have on their ‘to-go-to lists’.
This city is set on the east coast of Australia, south of Brisbane, and is renowned all over the world for being THE premier hotspot for holiday getaways down under, with the locals as well as foreigners flocking to its shores in their millions to enjoy the plentiful entertainment options and those shorelines with crystal clear water and white sand beaches. Who wouldn’t want to forget all about their worries in the world and enjoy a holiday in one of the most striking places in the World?
Having said that, not many people know the true history of the Gold Coast, and how it grew from its humble beginnings, into the huge and booming tourist hotspot it is today.
You have to go back around 6000 years to appreciate the first entry in the history of this part of the world when the original people were around. There are many sacred sites and historical artefacts in the Gold Coast area, which many people overlook in favour of the nightlife and tourist attractions that are often pushed to the fore. The Kombumerri people, the Yugambeh people, and the Aborigines have all shown historical importance here, and you can see some of it in Nightcap National Park.
The region was pretty much empty until the early 1800s, when John Oxley, the famous explorer, made land at Mermaid Beach. This kick-started inhabitation to the area, which began with cattle stations, before turning into sugar, cotton and dairy farms, and later down the track, timber milling and farming. During World War II the Gold Coast was a base area for servicemen also.
It’s not until after World War II when the Gold Coast began to be known as it is today, that is real estate, which then turned into tourism. Real estate is still booming in this part of the world, and the Gold Coast is still known as the prime holiday hotspot on the east coast. This was apparent after the 1920s when Surfer’s Paradise was cemented in history, and this is mainly when the laid-back surfer, beach holiday vibe all began.
The history of the Gold Coast is long and is now famous for family fun, nightlife, shopping, theme parks, top-class restaurant and hotels. The city was born of very humble beginnings indeed. It just goes to show that everything starts from scratch and becomes what you make it!
